Tupelo Family Remembers President George H.W. Bush

TUPELO, Miss.(WCBI) – As the nation mourns the passing of President George H.W. Bush, a Tupelo family remembers him in a special way.

Businessman Scott Reed says the 41st president came to Tupelo in 1987 to campaign for his father, Jack Reed Sr., as he ran for governor of Mississippi. Reed says the then vice-president thought his dad had a good chance of winning the Republican nomination that year.

Reed says his father insisted on having the rally in their home town of Tupelo. He shared, “And so he came in and flew in and stumped for Dad. And they really hit it off. It was surprising how well they liked each other. And so they didn’t become best friends, but they stayed in touch after Vice President Bush left and when he was President they were still staying in touch.”

Reed says President Bush later asked his father to chair an education committee and that required them to communicate and stay in touch.

Reed remembers President as a war hero and says he knew all facets of both government and private enterprise.

George H.W. Bush passed away Friday night at his home in Texas.
