Tourism Tax Now In Effect In Booneville

BOONEVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – If you eat out in Booneville, or stay at one of the city’s hotels, expect to pay a little more.

A two percent additional tax on restaurants, hotels and motels went into effect this month in Booneville.

Voters approved that tax in June as a way to promote tourism and parks and recreation options throughout the city.

Mayor Chris Lindley says there are already several options for the expected revenue, including Phase Two of a splash pad, or building nicer basketball courts.

“It has to be designated, we have paperwork forms, we went to Jackson, talked to state auditor, and will know how to do it when the time comes, we haven’t got our first check but we’re looking forward to it,” Mayor Lindley said.

Funds from the tax will go into a special account, separate from the city’s general fund.  Mayor Lindley says city officials have not decided how the money will be split between tourism and parks.
