BREAKING: Hamilton Girls Basketball Coach Treated and Released Following Attack

AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) — A high school basketball coach was treated and released at Gilmore Regional Medical Center in Amory Thursday following an attack from a parent.

According to a person with knowledge from the incident, Hamilton girls basketball head coach Sue Verner was attacked by a parent following their game at Amory on Thursday night.

The attack occurred during the first quarter of the Hamilton-Amory boys basketball game. The altercation caused the game to be stopped and cancelled as police cleared the gymnasium.

WCBI has learned that coach Verner was enforcing a rule that players must ride the bus back to the school following away games. The parent of a player did not agree with the rule and an altercation ensued which resulted in the parent attacking Verner.

Verner was “knocked out cold” according to the information WCBI received and she was transported to the hospital.

According to Brandon Speck of the Daily Journal, Verner was released from the hospital Thursday evening with a fracture under her left eye and a gash above the other.

UPDATE, 11:10pm – Amory police chief Ronnie Bowen tells WCBI that the assailant, Heather Thompson, turned herself into police Thursday night and was charged with simple assault on a school official, which is a felony.

Thompson was transferred to Monroe County Adult Detention Center and is expected to be arraigned on Friday.
