TREMONT, Miss. (WCBI)- Around the holidays, many try to find ways to help those less fortunate by adopting from an angel tree or like the students in Tremont who decided to give back through a food drive.
In Tremont, the elementary and high school only have about 324 students. Their small numbers didn’t stop them when it came to donating food for the hungry.
“As President of FCA, we partnered with Student Council and we wanted to do what FCA suppose to do and show the love of Christ and you do that by giving,” says Jacob Pharr.
Students here at Tremont High School raised over ten thousand pounds of food for the hungry. Some say it was because the faculty and staff gave them something to look forward to.
“Somebody suggested one day, would you shave your head if we got to 5,000. I was like sure that would be no problem not thinking that it would happen,” says Brady Ramey.
The students took that as a challenge. Within, two weeks the children gathered 10,000 lbs. of food.
Principal Ramey wasn’t the only one to sport a new look. When the students got to 10 thousand pounds… some of the coaches had to trade their gym shorts in for some tutus.
“I think we donated more because we were so excited to see what we all could do as a school and seeing out principal getting his head shaved that was the most exciting thing and nobody thought the tutu was going to be that big of a deal but when we saw the performance it was great,” says Lakyn Todd.
2013 Miss Mississippi, Chelsea Rick even came out to help celebrate with students on their hard work.
“I raised ten thousand pounds after about eight years of organizing turkey drives and different things like that just sparsely throughout the state when I could and so I know how much ten thousand pounds really is and that’s just an unbelievably amount of food that those kids worked together and they sat their goals high and they worked to achieve them,” says Chelsea Rick.
So no matter if the students were gathering food for fun, thanks to their big hearts there will be satisfied stomachs this holiday season.
Tremont High School is the smallest in Itawamba county but raised the most in food donations.
