Students Learn How to Stop Bullying
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A local group is raising awareness about bullying.
Junior Auxiliary of Columbus spent the day at Columbus Middle School, Friday, to show kids how to put a stop to bullying, and what to do if they see someone getting picked on.
It’s part of their new “Stand Up to Speak Out” program, which they hope to do every school year.
October is also National Bullying Prevention Month, and organizers say this was the best time to reach out to students.
“Bullying is such a major topic in our nation right now,” said organizer Shannon Stafford. “Just trying to teach kids about standing up against bullying and just educating them on what bullying is, and how it can affect everyone. Not only the bully and the victim, but the bystander as well. ”
“It will help the other students that are being bullied to stand up for themselves,” said sixth grader Sara Grace Vought.
“I think that we need to change our school around, and make it a better place,” said sixth grader Mya Dismuke.
Students also made creative projects related to the topic.
Community leaders will judge those projects, and will award prizes to the winners next week.
