Student Athletes of the Week: Anthony Sharp and Brady Scarbrough, Victory Christian Academy HS, Boys basketball
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — They aren’t related. They aren’t neighbors. They aren’t even in the same class, but senior guard Anthony Sharp and sophomore forward Brady Scarbrough give Victory Christian Academy the leadership and scoring that has built an unbeaten season and a second straight run at a state title.
“They really work well together and they play to each others strengths,” said head coach Brent Harris.
Both are averaging 22 points a game. A three-star athlete, Sharp won a title with the football team last fall.
“Anthony is just a leader. He’s an athlete. He scores 50 touchdowns in football, and averages 22 points a game, hits over five hundred, and throws a 90 mile an hour fastball. Brady is a scorer. Brady’s young. Brady’s coming on and they just complement each other,” said Harris.
While scoring gets them attention, they say it’s the hard work this team puts in on defense that could land a title.
“We’d be down by nine and we’d come back and win it, but it’s really been based on defense I think,” said Sharp noted.
“We have got a better defense this year then we had last year,” added Scarbrough.
Off the court, Sharp ranks 5th academically in a class of 28. He enjoys English while Brady is a fan of geometry. Sharp has a couple of basketball and football tryouts at small colleges after graduation but nursing may be his future.
“I got a couple of friends that are in the PTA program and my girlfriend is going to be a nurse so it just seemed intriguing and I’ve always like to help people out you know and the body, I like the body, ” he said.
Victory Christian won a state title in 2007 and made it to the semifinals last year. Now, the 19-0 Eagles open the state tournament this week in Oxford, Alabama against Lindsey Lane Christian of Huntsville. In his sixth year as coach, Harris says this team’s chemistry could take it all the way.
“The group as a whole they enjoy each other. They do stuff outside of basketball. It’s just about playing and winning and having a good time and being with their friends,” said Harris.
