VERNON, AL (WCBI) — The Lamar County Bulldogs are looking to bounce back after a loss to county-rival Sulligent last week. This team can win. They reeled off six straight victories before that loss. While there is one game to go in the regular season, the Bulldogs are also ready to host a playoff game.
The Lamar County Bulldogs are finding ways to come together. After winning just three games last year, the team has six this year. Seven seniors are leading the way on and off the field.
“We’ve had some kids devote to the weight-room this summer; did their job in the weight-room. Seniors have stepped up. Last year going three and seven kind of motivated them, hey we are going to try and be better this year, and I think for the most part we have been,”said Coach James Moore.
“We’ve made a huge comeback. Our offensive line has gotten better. Our quarterback has gotten ten times better. Our running backs is ten times better. We are just a better team all the way around,” said athlete Denver Gentle.
The offensive line is one reason for more wins in Vernon.
“These guys have really worked hard and bought in to what we are doing, and really worked hard to get where they’re at. Your team kind of starts with your offensive line, and without those guys you don’t do a whole lot,” Moore says.
The Lamar County Bulldogs are divisional champs for the first time since 2013. Next week they will get to host their first round playoff game.
“Me personally, I haven’t ever won a division championship, so it feels good, and I think the whole team feels good,” says teammate Joseph White.
“This is my first time as a senior going to the playoffs, and then we won the region. That just amazed me,” adds defensive tackle Isaiah Hill.
Senior wide receiver Jon Kilpatrick adds, “We were really excited. That was our main goal starting the year is making it to the playoffs, and now that we are there we are excited about it.”
“Our goal was to get in, and now our goal is to win. Each week we’re trying to set new goals and our kids are doing a great job setting goals and accomplishing goals,” Moore adds.
Lamar County will host its final regular season game Friday against Winfield.
