Student Athlete of the Week: Jon David Poss, Amory HS, Baseball
AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) — Many athletes don’t recover from it once. But an Amory High senior has done it twice. Now this week’s WCBI Student Athlete of the Week is using that newfound perspective on life and sports for what he and his teammates hope is a championship run.
Amory High senior Jon David Poss was a football and baseball player with a bright future from his freshman year on. Then in the first game of his junior football season, he tore the ACL in a knee. He spent months rehabbing only to tear it again playing baseball the next spring.
He skipped football last fall, but is now healthy and back on the baseball field.
“Seeing it from a different view point changed my outlook on it. Seeing it from the sideline I guess I matured more mentally and physically. I had to get back from two surgeries which was a long road, but eventually I think it’s made me a better player and person overall,” Poss said.
Jon David played quarterback on the football team and plays third base and pitches some on the diamond. He signed with Northeast Community College to play baseball next season and is excited about the opportunity.
“Signing with Northeast was a big stress reliever for sure. I had a weight on my back for the first month of the season and finally signing took the pressure off me,” said Poss.
Amory has a rich sports tradition, especially in baseball with trophy cases full of titles. Jon David has grown up in that tradition and wants to combine that with his love of Math and English to one day become a coach.
“Just the love of the game of both sports. I like being able to talk sports and I think I would be good to reaching out to young adults and just to make them better people and not just athletes, ” said Poss.
His friends and coaches see success in his future.
“I definitely believe he will be successful and I’ll think he’ll do whatever it takes for him to be on the field to be successful. He’s not a guy that wants to sit out. He’s a good team player,” said Head Coach Chad Williams.
“He’s a hard worker. I played tournament ball with him. everything he does he tries to do at one hundred percent best he can do,” said teammate Tyler Davis.
Jon David’s mother Kelly is a 1968 graduate of Amory High School and his father David played football and baseball for the Aberdeen Bulldogs.
The Amory Panthers return to action Thursday when they host the Corinth Warriors.
