NETTLETON, Miss. (WCBI) —  Jabria Pounds has been playing basketball and softball since the seventh grade. She’s earn all-division honors the last three years and this season is averaging more than 20 points a game. Now the 5′-8″ senior forward wants to lead the Nettleton girls basketball team to the Class 3-A State Tournament for the first time since 1997.

“She really does everything for us. I mean when we’re down she picks us up. When we need points she gets us going. She’s everything to us really,” said teammate Jayla Jones.

“Jabria is a natural leader. She’s very athletic. She’s very intelligent. All three years that I’ve been here she’s been a leader on this team. A leading scorer, rebounder, leading on defense, gets leading steals. Everybody looks up to her,” said Head Coach Shelley Walters.

Jabria has been chosen as the division player of the year and says its one of the biggest accomplishments that she has received so far this season.

“It’s an honor. I work hard for what I do and I’m just proud to get that honor and being chosen as the division player of the year,” said student athlete Jabria Pounds.

Jabria has some scholarship offers to continue her career after high school, but she says a career in dental hygiene is her long-term goal.

“It’s something different cause you know like every student that comes out of college they want to do like physical therapy or get into the nursing program. I just thought it was something that I would really be interested in,” said Pounds.

Jabria’s father George Pounds graduated and played basketball at Nettleton High School, while her mother Deborah Hadley graduated at Tupelo High School.
