Video: Student Athlete of the Week: Hailey Hughey and Morgan Barrett, Smithville HS, Softball

SMITHVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Smithville’s slow and fast pitch softball teams have won six state championships since an f-5 tornado destroyed their community in April of 2011. Now this season’s team is led by two seniors who are number one and three in their class and are looking to win their fourth straight championship.

Morgan Barrett and Hailey Hughey have won a combined of nine state championships in slow and fast pitch softball at Smithville High School. Hughey has been apart of the title runs since the seventh grade and Barrett transferred from Hatley High School after her eighth grade year. Both of them have enjoyed the journey wearing the maroon and white colors.

“I’ve been able to be apart of winning six state championships and that’s just been a really experience and being with the girls. It’s mostly like out here,” said CO-Student Athlete Hailey Hughey.

“It’s definitely been a good journey compared to my other experience. it was just a big change here with coach duke and all the other girls and I’ve just had a really great time,” said CO-Student Athlete Morgan Barrett.

“Barrett and Hughey are leaders on and off the field. Barrett is the valedictorian of her class with a 4.1 G-P-A and Hughey is third best in her class with a 4.0 G-P-A and Head Coach Jeremy Duke has saw the leadership that they have brought to the team,” said WCBI Sports Reporter Jonathan Flippo.

“Both girls have done a phenomenal job of taking care of business off the field as much as on the field. I depend on them for a lot of leadership and just aspects of the game and just coming ready to play everyday and ready to practice everyday,” said Head Coach Jeremy Duke.

Barrett and Hughey will move on to college this fall following graduation and they both hope to leave a good legacy.

“I hope to leave a really good legacy. I hope to go out as state champions again and just know that I done all I could do and be who I could while I was here,” Hughey said.

“I want to be remembered as a positive role model, a good leader, and just for the younger kids to look up to me and remember me and think good thoughts about me,” Barrett said.
