Student Athlete of the Week: Choctaw County Chargers, Boys Basketball

[syndicaster id=’6180999′]CHOCTAW COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI SPORTS) — The Choctaw County Chargers boys basketball team are off to a hot start this season. They suffered their first loss last Friday against Choctaw Central, but that’s not stopping the Chargers from moving forward.

The Choctaw County boys basketball team are off to a nineteen and one start on the season and their best start in school history in their third year in existence since Ackerman and Weir consolidated in 2013. The basketball team is led by five seniors this season and Head Basketball Coach Gary Beals knows what to expect from them in his system.

“They’ve just listened. We’ve kind of changed and I’ve kind of changed with them so it’s been kind of a mutual understanding. They get along, they practice hard, and that’s one of the greatest attributes is they bring it every day in practice,” said Head Coach Gary Beals.

Senior leaders, Mello Woodard, Danny Woodard, and Jay Coleman have been together for the last five years under Coach Beals and they continue to take it game by game and coming together as one.

“Chemistry; we all are like brothers on the court. We all pitch in to help one another on each and everything we do together,” said Senior Guard Mello Woodard.

“We got to come together as brothers you know work hard. As we say take up for one another,” said Senior Guard Danny Woodard.

“It’s been terrific. Coach Beals he always says defense wins games, so everyday we play we practice and try to play defense. Execute offensive plays,” said Senior Forward Jay Coleman.

“This basketball team is turning it up defensively holding teams to under thirty-nine points per game,” said WCBI Sports Reporter Jonathan Flippo.

“We got to play hard. Don’t let them get in the paint. Don’t let them score,” Danny Woodard said.

“Very impressive. We work hard everyday at practice to do things just like that,” Mello Woodard said.

The Choctaw County fans are behind this team one hundred percent and Coach Beals believes this team needs to handle the pressure and take it step by step and move forward.

“The whole county is behind us. It’s not this town, but this is a county school and you know the kids they’re handling it really well and that’s what we’ve got to do the next two or three weeks is to handle it and take that step by step,” Beals said.

Choctaw County returns to action Thursday at 7:30 pm when they host Philadelphia in a crucial division game.
