Student Athlete of the Week: Alexis Garner, Aliceville HS Girls Basketball

ALICEVILLE, AL (WCBI) — Basketball runs in Alexis Garner’s family. Her mother Tara Garner was a star at Noxubee County and went to four state championships before playing at Rust College. Now the 5-foot-6 point guard is leading the Aliceville, Alabama Lady Yellow Jackets in their bid for the Alabama state tournament.

“Over the four years she has brought speed and leadership and she’s really that extension that I need on the floor. This year she has grown so even when she’s not scoring the high points she puts all of her teammates in position to succeed,” said Alexis’ Head Coach Sebastian Shamery.

Her teammates feed off her leadership and competitive spirit.

Alexis has also brought great motivation and leadership to the team this season and her coach and teammates have taken notice.

“She’s a good leader to the team and she’s just very competitive,” said Junior teammate Kaitelyn Shamery.

“She’s very competitive and hardworking,” said Senior teammate Zharia Eddins.

Alexis is averaging more than 14 points a game this year. Last summer, she was in Oklahoma City to get some pointers from N-B-A MVP Kevin Durant at his camp.

“It was one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had,” said Student Athlete Alexis Garner.

Alexis has her sights set on either MSU or like her mother, Rust College. Her coach thinks she may have a shot, but he is certain she’ll be a success one way or the other.

“She has big goals and big dreams. Basketball would her a way to get anywhere she wants to go, but she’s also smart so she does have an alternate plan. If she can’t get into basketball her education is very important to her and her family,” said Shamery.

“I read all the time just like if I’m at home or something I’ll just be reading. That’s something I could do all day,” said Garner.

The Lady Yellow Jackets return to action Friday when they host the Pickens County Lady Tornadoes in a big cross county rivalry.
