TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Mississippi’s state treasurer wants to serve as the state’s top law enforcement officer.
State Treasurer Lynn Fitch spoke to supporters in Tupelo, as she officially announced her bid for Attorney General.
The Republican has served for seven years as state treasurer and she said her conservative principles and experience prepares her for the role of attorney general.
Fitch began her legal career more than 30 years ago as an assistant attorney general.
Fitch said there are several major issues the AG’s office needs to tackle, among them are human trafficking and the opioid crisis.
“It is truly an epidemic so we have to look at it from all angles, that’s why partnerships, teamwork, collaborations are so important because every angle has to be addressed, even bringing opioid education into the schools, look at how we outreach and again bring all parties together to end this crisis,” Fitch said.
Incumbent Jim Hood, a Democrat, is running for governor this year. Republican State Representative Mark Baker of Brandon has filed papers to run for attorney general. So far, no Democrat has entered the race.
