State Supreme Court To Hear Jones Appeal
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – The Mississippi Supreme Court will hear an appeal from Brett Jones, who was convicted of murdering his grandfather in an argument over a phone bill. Jones is seeking a new trial on grounds that his attorneys should’ve presented more evidence to show the killing was self-defense. Jones is serving a life sentence from Lee County. He was convicted in the 2004 death of Bertis Jones, who died at home in Shannon after being stabbed repeatedly with a steak knife. A judge denied his post-conviction petition in 2009. The state Court of Appeals upheld the trial court last year. Brett Jones has claimed if an accurate layout of the kitchen had been provided, the jury would’ve seen he was trapped by his grandfather and had no way to escape.
