State Budget Approved for 2014
JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) – While many of us were enjoying the Easter holiday, both chambers of the state House and Senate were in Jackson Sunday to vote on more than 100 budget bills.
On Saturday, lawmakers put the finishing touches on a five and half billion dollar budget, giving Mississippi schools, universities, mental health programs and prisons more money in 2014.
Senator Eugene Clark of Hollandale says no agencies will see drastic cuts in funding.
Fifty million dollars will go to the state’s K thru 12 education but 27 million of that will cover teachers’ portion of the retirement fund.
After today’s session, Governor Phil Bryant commended the legislature for approving the Education Works package, calling it the most tranformational education act in Mississippi’s history.
