COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The Odd Fellows Cemetery in Starkville is getting a new look. The Starkville Cemetery Association and MSU Maroon Volunteers began cleaning up the historic grounds and replacing an old fence.
Odd Fellows contains about four thousand burial sites and is the largest cemetery in Oktibbeha County. Veterans from all U.S. Wars starting with the American Revolution until the Iraq war are laid to rest there. The Association cleans the cemetery yearly but this year bollards and chains will be added along the east side of the cemetery for better protection.
“From time to time, we had one care that accidentally ran into the fence and ran into the cemetery. So we had some issues there with someone that actually ran into a tombstone. So we’re just trying to upgrade the look of it as well as we thought this would be a good fence,” says Steve Parrot, a board member with the Starkville Cemetery Association.
The oldest tomb at Odd Fellows dates back to 1825.
