JACKSON – On May 22, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) stocked approximately 2,500 Florida-strain largemouth bass into Lake Monroe near Aberdeen.

“Florida-strain largemouth bass are typically more aggressive, and grow faster than the northern strain largemouth bass,” says MDWFP Fisheries Biologist Tyler Stubbs.  “Stocking rates were decreased to help promote faster growth, and to delay future bass over-crowding.”  The fish were reared at MDWFP’s Turcotte fish hatchery located near Canton.

Lake Monroe is being renovated and is closed to the public.  In addition to largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, channel catfish, crappie, and grass carp will be stocked.
