LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — The screaming sound of smoke alarms save a Lowndes County mother and her four children.
Amarlo Smith and her children woke just after 1:15 Monday morning to find smoke and flames sweeping toward them from one end of their home on Shady Lane in southeastern Lowndes County.
Smith and the kids, ages 17, 15, 13 and 10, managed to escape through bedroom windows without any injuries. But their one-story home was a total loss. They also lost two cars.
Smith says it appeared the fire started near the carport and storage room, but she isn’t sure how. Firefighters are expected to return later today to look for a cause.
She said she was glad she had smoke alarms and that her mother, who is older, wasn’t at home because she may have had a harder time getting out.
The family does have insurance but any one wishing to help can do so through the American Red Cross.
