SMITHVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – We all remember the devastating tornado that ripped through the SmithVille area in April 2011. Many have come together since then to help out the community and today some Smithville students are getting new books for the classroom.
The smiles on their faces says it all. In honor of Mississippi First Lady Deborah Bryant, Lowndes County Republican Women raised over 4 thousand dollars to give the students at Smithville Attendance Center new books for their classrooms.
“When they lost all of their books during the tornado back in April of 2011, the Republican women of Lowndes county decided that they wanted to come up and really help out in some way, So to see them get these books and books that are brand new, we have a few just a few that are slightly used, this will be great, a great experience for them,” said Mississippi First Lady Deborah Bryant.
Mississippi’s First Lady and other community leaders went classroom to classroom personally handing books to the kids. Each book was carefully picked for each grade level.
“They teach moral and character values that we feel like children need and also we’re hoping it’s going to entice the children to grab those books off the shelf and read and read some more,” said Mitzi Younger, President of Lowndes County Republican Women.
It’s a project that’s close to the hearts of many, bringing books to 16 different classes and children from kindergarten all the way to 6th grade.
“It’s an amazing donation and as you can see it just continues the community support that we’ve had for almost a year and a half now since the tornado but the backbone of any school is our literacy program and these books just go a long way towards helping us met that goal,” said Principal Chad O’Brian.
And thanks to this special group of women the legacy of learning will continue in Smithville.
Republican women from across the state, local chapter members, and members of our local community helped make the contributions.
