BURNSVILLE, Miss. – Recruitment for full-time skilled trade workers has begun as Mississippi Silicon approaches final construction phases and equipment installation at its Burnsville manufacturing site.

“We are very pleased with the support and assistance of the Mississippi Department of Employment Security’s Workforce Investment Network and Northeast Mississippi Community College (NEMCC) as they serve as our gateway for recruiting, evaluating and supplying candidates for permanent positions,” said John Lalley, Vice President, Mississippi Silicon.

“Our immediate focus is to hire a team of experienced electricians and maintenance workers to be onboard by mid-April so they can be in place for the installation of the first of two SMS-Siemag submerged arc furnaces.

“Northeast is pleased to support economic development projects that bring jobs to our region,” said Nadara Cole, Vice President Workforce Training and Economic Development at NEMCC. “To date, interest has been strong with high-caliber candidates preparing to work in a manufacturing environment.”

Qualified candidates must demonstrate career readiness skills and achieve Job Pass and Silver Level requirements to be eligible for maintenance, electrician, operator, technician and other positions at Mississippi Silicon.

With an annual capacity of 36,000 metric ton, manufacturing operations are slated to begin this summer. Mississippi Silicon expects to employ 200 workers at the facility, located in the Northeast Mississippi Waterfront Industrial Park, within the next several years.

Construction continues on schedule for the $200 million facility which will manufacture silicon metal for use in a variety of processes and manufacturing sectors including the automotive, aluminum, chemical, semiconductor and solar industries.

Mississippi Silicon selected Mississippi as a strategic location for access to and transportation of raw materials and for the efficient delivery to North American markets. Upon completion Mississippi Silicon will be the first new North American silicon metal production operation constructed in the past 40 years.

The plant originally was coming to Lowndes County but ended up in Burnsville when Lowndes County cut off dealings with the start-up company because its backers missed several financial deadlines imposed by the county.
