WPPD investigate shooting into dwelling

West Point, MS, Wednesday, November 27, 2013:  The West Point Police Department is investigating a report of shots fired into an occupied dwelling.  The shots were reported fired late Monday night.  Police were dispatched to a report of shots fired on Wyman Drive in an area of the city known as Westwood II.  However, since the callers didn’t actually see a shooter, it was unclear where the shots originated from or the direction of the shots.  Officers were unable to recover any evidence at that time.

It was not until Tuesday afternoon that a homeowner reported damage from what looked like a bullet hole to police. After discovering where to focus the investigation police recovered evidence at the scene that is consistent with multiple shots being fired.  Police also found evidence of damage at another residence in close proximity to the complainant’s home.

An investigation into the time of the initial call has revealed that at the time of the shooting there were at least 4 children between the ages of 1 and 15 years old inside one of the residences where the initial damage was found.  In both residences police recovered evidence indicating that at least one projectile passed through a window and lodged in a wall in the interior of the home.

Chief Brinkley of the West Point Police Department says, “It’s disturbing that people will shoot into houses without even considering whether children may be inside.  It’s even more disturbing to think that there may be witnesses or neighbors who might have seen something but neglect to report it.  We’re asking citizens who may have information about this incident to consider; what if this was your home or your children.”

Detectives already have a person of interest in this case who is the main suspect and expect to make an arrest very soon.  This incident is still under investigation and anyone with any information is encouraged to call the West Point Police Department or the Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers.  Your tip could lead to a reward worth up to $1,000.
