Video: School District Merger Bill For Chickasaw County Passes Second Chamber

JACKSON, Miss. (AP / WCBI) – Plans to merge the administrative offices of Chickasaw County’s three school districts are headed back to the state Senate.

House members Tuesday passed both bills.

Senate Bill 2461 would merge the school districts in Houston, Houlka and Okolona. The Senate had earlier proposed only merging Houston and Houlka, leaving Okolona independent.

Okolona has threatened to ask the U.S. Justice Department to block any merger based on Okolona’s desegregation order. Leaders in all three districts oppose any form of consolidation.
