PITTSBORO, Miss. (WCBI) – Hundreds gathered in Pittsboro Saturday night for a banquet honoring Dr. Martin Luther King.
The eighth annual event was sponsored by the Loggins Scholarship Committee, which gives a scholarship to a deserving student from each of the three Calhoun County high schools – Bruce, Calhoun City, and Vardaman.
This is actually the 26th year the Loggins scholarship has been awarded.
Dr. Carl Roberts founded the scholarship. He says moving the event to MLK weekend has been a huge boost.
“We used to have it June or May, but we found it that bringing the people back on the weekend of Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday has been a real plus for the committee,” Roberts said. “We seem like we have more people than normally at home at this particular time. And then you’re just in the spirit of giving and doing things.”
Roberts wanted to create a legacy for Coach William Curtis Loggins, a Calhoun County native who taught and coached mostly in the county for 31 years.
Roberts says Loggins was an inspiration to his students.
