Safety checkpoint turns to chase in Carroll County
CARROLL COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Deputies said he had a gun and tried to run. Now, a Memphis man is behind bars in Carroll County.
Saturday, deputies were conducting a safety checkpoint on Highway 7 in the Avalon area.
During one of the stops, deputies noticed a gun in the vehicle.
As they were talking to the passenger, the driver sped away.
Deputies chased him North on Highway 7 until he crashed into a power pole, and knocked out power to 1,000 residents.
The driver and passenger took off on foot.
Deputies caught the passenger, Marcus Traylor.
As a result of the wreck, deputies reportedly found marijuana and two handguns.
Traylor was charged with possession of marijuana enhanced by possession of a firearm.
They also discovered that the car was reported stolen in the Memphis area.
With the help of the Montgomery County County Sheriff’s Office drone, deputies were able to find the accused driver, Cordarius Deshun McGee of Itta Bena. He had an injured arm and was flown to a hospital.
The sheriff’s office expected to charge him as well.
