Representative Gregg Harper Secures Republican Party Nomination for Mississippi District 3 Seat
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Incumbent U.S. Rep. Gregg Harper defeated Hardy Caraway for the Republican nomination Tuesday in Mississippi’s 3rd Congressional District.
The district crosses all or parts of 24 counties from Starkville southwest to Natchez.
Harper, 58, has promoted new treatments for developmental disorders, supported domestic energy production and pushed for more use of telemedicine.
Caraway, a 68-year-old Quitman resident, said he ran to promote industrial development and fight the power plant Mississippi Power Co. is building in Kemper County.
Harper raised $760,000 since his last election, spending $436,000. Caraway didn’t file campaign finance reports.
Three Democrats were vying for their party’s nomination. The winners will meet independent Roger Gerrard and Barbara Dale Washer of the Reform Party in the Nov. 4 general election.
