Rebels Sign Junior College Lefty Pitcher
OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI/Ole Miss Athletics) – Ole Miss has added left-handed pitcher Christian Trent to the 2013 signing class, head coach Mike Bianco announced on Wednesday.
Trent will join the Rebels from Delgado Community College in New Orleans. He will be eligible to compete with the Rebels in the 2013-14 academic year and has three years of eligibility remaining.
“We’re really excited about Christian joining our program next year,” said Ole Miss assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Carl Lafferty. “There is no doubt he will make an immediate impact on our pitching staff. He’s a left-handed pitcher who is 88-92 mph and has a really good breaking ball. We’re excited to have him as an Ole Miss Rebel.”
This season at Delgado, Trent has posted a 7-2 record through 10 starts with four complete games and two complete game shutouts. The southpaw holds a 3.26 ERA and has struck out team-leading 62 batters and allowed only 12 walks through 60.2 innings of work. Trent is holding opponents to a .241 batting average as he has helped Delgado post a 42-8 record this season.
The left-hander is in his first season with Delgado after transferring from LSU following the 2012 season.
A native of Covington, La., Trent attended St. Paul’s High School where he was named a Class 5A All-State selection in Louisiana as a senior and was also named the New Orleans Metro Pitcher of the Year. He helped lead his team to the district title as he posted a 9-3 record with 90 strikeouts and only 20 walks.
Trent held a 1.24 ERA as a senior after pitching eight complete games on the season on the way to a 9-3 mark. He was also 8-3 as a junior and 10-1 as a sophomore, compiling a career record of 27-7 at St. Paul’s.
