Rebel Righty Mayers Named SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week
OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI/Ole Miss Athletics) – Junior right-hander Mike Mayers has been named the Southeastern Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week following his shutout victory over No. 13 Mississippi State, the league office announced on Monday.
Mayers, in his first relief appearance of the season, entered the game to start the second inning of the series opener on Saturday after the contest was suspended in the middle of the first inning due to inclement weather on Friday night.
The junior tied a season-high with 7.0 innings of work in the outing, holding the Bulldogs to two hits in his time on the mound and kept Mississippi State off the board before handing the ball off to closer Brett Huber. Only one runner advanced past second base with Mayers in the game, while only five reached base on the afternoon with two hits, two walks and a hit batter.
Mayers struck out five on the afternoon.
The right-hander set the table for the Rebels to pick up a series win over the Bulldogs and moved Ole Miss into fifth place in the overall conference standings heading into the final weekend of competition.
The Rebels play a midweek contest at Southern Miss on Tuesday night with a 6 p.m. first pitch before heading to No. 3 LSU for a weekend series that begins on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. That series-opening contest will be televised nationally by ESPNU. Friday’s game is set for a 7 p.m. start and will be televised by Cox Sports, while Saturday’s finale is set to begin at noon and will be broadcast by CBS College Sports.
