STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — The state will no longer pursue two capital murder charges against convicted murderer Willie Jerome “Fly” Manning.
WCBI first reported prosecutor’s plans in February after the state Supreme Court ordered a new trial for Manning in the 1993 murders of Emmoline Jimmerson and her daughter Alberta Jordan.
The court ruled Starkville Police had not turned over evidence to prosecutors or defense4 attorneys that could have raised questions about the testimony of the state’s key witness who said he was in another apartment when he saw Manning at Jimmerson’s apartment.
That witness also has recanted his testimony. Based on the court’s ruling and the witness decision, District Attorney Forrest Allgood has filed a motion that in effect dismisses the case. WCBI reported Allgood’s intentions in February.
The two women were murdered during a burglary at their Brooksville Gardens Apartment in Starkville.
Manning remains on death row for the murder conviction of two Mississippi State students in the fall of 1992.
