Principal Says Sherry Buford’s Students Were Her Family
OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI) – The victim of that tragic, head on collision on I-22 taught sixth grade math at Oxford Intermediate School. That school’s principal remembers the educator as someone full of care, compassion and encouragement.
Outside of Oxford Intermediate School, another delivery from a local florist, while black ribbons are posted at the entrance.
Inside, teachers, staff and administrators comfort students and each other.
“Teachers had been notified before school started, we sent a message to parents to let them know as well so we came in with heavy hearts, we did pull all classes together this morning, to speak with them, we have counselors, pastors, people available, have been here all day and helping with kids as they grieve,” said Principal Steve Hurdle.
Principal Hurdle worked with Sherry Buford for years, but more importantly, considered her a close friend.
He says although Buford was never married and had no children, all of her current and former students were her family.
“Everytime I walked in the room and she was teaching, it was something to behold, a gifted teacher and could reach some of the most unreachable kids, kids that other people would just scratch their head and say, can’t do anything with them, she could bring them out in a way few could do,” he said.
Hurdle says students have left notes on Ms Buford’s classroom door throughout the day.
“They are wanting to express their grief, love, support, the door in the hallway and around the door are filled with notes of love, support, scripture, it’s pretty overwhelming, students I think are doing more to hold us adults up then we are them,” Hurdle said.
The principal also says the rest of the school year is dedicated to the memory of Ms Buford. He says she would want students and teachers to continue to strive for excellence in everything they do.
The principal also says Sherry Buford was known for her work in her church and volunteer efforts throughout the Oxford community.
