TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) –   The second day of that baseball tournament was cancelled, in honor of Lane.  But as WCBI’s Allie Martin reports, hundreds of people showed up at the Ballard Park Sportsplex to comfort one another, and help the family.

On most Sundays, Brother Will Turner is in the pulpit at his church near Bruce. . But Sunday afternoon he led a devotional as hundreds gathered not far from the spot where 10 year old Lane Rodgers lost his life.

As an assistant with the Tombigbee Tribe, Turner was at the Sportsplex all day Saturday for the tournament.  He encouraged everyone to find ways to help the Rodgers family.

“We’re all to just come together as a family and to be able to do what God has called us to do and that’s to serve His name and give Him honor and glory so with this family we just want to give them our condolences and be there for them in this time and do anything we possibly can do be of help,” Bro. Turner said.

Tournament organizers, and Tupelo Park and Rec officials wanted to give others a chance to help financially.   Although the tournament was cancelled,  the Sportsplex was opened so parents, ball players, coaches and friends could give money to the Rodgers family,  visit a makeshift memorial and pray.

“Main focus here is the family, trying to keep them in our prayers, that’s the main focus, but we do appreciate, we have had a large number of attendants this morning,” said Michael Gibson of the Tupelo Parks and Rec Dept.

Going forward, Pastor Turner said Christians can play a role in the healing process for the family of Lane Rodgers.

“Those of us who profess Jesus is Lord of our lives,  is to be able to reach out to this family, not just for this week, but for the weeks and months ahead and just to be there for them, and to allow them to know they have an ear they can talk to and somebody that loves them,” Turner said.

Representatives from the city of Tupelo say they may attend funeral services for Lane Rodgers this week.
