OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI Sports) – It’s the old school making way for the new school at Oxford High School. Johnny Hill has retired and former assistant Chris Cutcliffe is the Chargers’ next head coach.
“Working with Coach Hill is outstanding,” Cutcliffe said. “He’s the best in the business. I learned a lot from him that I’m thankful for.”
The 29 year old is the son of David Cutcliffe, the former Ole Miss coach who has turned around the program at Duke. Chris was an intern with his father at Duke.
“Working with my dad was great,” Chris said. “I also saw how much my dad was busy, how important our family was to him.”
Cutcliffe is well aware of the talent that graduated this past year and the school’s goal of getting over the hump after losing three-straight years in the state title game.
“It’s exciting to me to watch them and see who can step up to that challenge,” Cutcliffe said. “We lost some great leaders.”
“This offseason has said a lot,” senior Colton Skidmore said. He’s started 45-straight games for Oxford. “We’ve had a lot of young guys step up.”
“That’s what the summer workouts are for, to see who’s going to fight,” junior Hiram Wadlington said.
Cutcliffe said sophomore John Reece McClure will be taking over at quarterback.
