Owners of Trailer Park Charged With Racial Discrimination
BELDEN, Miss. (WCBI) – Owners of a trailer park, accused of racism after evicting an interracial couple, now face charges from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
We first reported this story back in April 2016.
HUD charged Linda and Gene Baker, the owners and managers of the Belden Trailer Park, with violating The Fair Housing Act.
They’re accused of refusing to rent a lot to an interracial married couple, with two children.
HUD alleges the property manager told the wife that the couple had to move out after finding out that her husband was African-American.
The Fair Housing Act prohibits housing providers from refusing to rent because of race or color.
HUD says, “this case reminds property owners, that they have an obligation to treat all people fairly.”
If found guilty the Bakers could have to pay damages to the couple and possibly civil penalties.
