Ole Miss QB Barry Brunetti Arrested in May
OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI/Clarion-Ledger) — Barry Brunetti and a former football player were both arrested in early May after an auto accident, the Memphis Commercial-Appeal is reporting.
Brunetti, Ole Miss’ No. 2 quarterback heading into the 2013 season, was charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. Randall Mackey was charged with misdemeanor simple assault after allegedly shoving a police officer.
“We addressed this incident internally,” coach Hugh Freeze said in a statement.
It occurred on May 10 after an auto accident. Officers entered an apartment and noticed the strong smell of marijuana odor, according to the report. After finding a marijuana grinder in Brunetti’s room, the quarterback was arrested and admitting to having recently smoked the substance.
Mackey was arrested after driving his shoulder into the officer’s chest.
The car, the paper is reporting, belonged to Nick Brassell. Brassell, who Freeze said last week is not likely to academy qualify to play this fall, was not charged in this incident but was charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia after a January incident that occurred before he was re-enrolled at Ole Miss.
Brunetti has started two games for Ole Miss during his career and is the projected backup to Bo Wallace. A senior, Brunetti has expressed interest in switching positions, much like Mackey did.
Mackey became a useful reserve running back and receiver after being Ole Miss’ quarterback in 2011; he graduated in December.
