OKOLONA, Miss. (WCBI) – Jack Clark’s Okolona Chieftains are aiming to improve on two seasons of falling short of their goals.

Okolona has won just two games each of the past two years, snapping a streak of five-straight playoff appearances.

But there’s optimism for this year.

“I’m as excited about it as I have been since I’ve been here because we have so many coming back,” Clark said.

Okolona only loses a few starters from last year’s team. There are six seniors and what Clark calls an experienced junior class.

“We have a lot of returners, a lot of young kids,” Clark said. “The goal every year in our division is just to get in the playoffs. It’s a tough division but we’re excited about the opportunity.”

His players agree.

“That is the goal. We play in such a tough division but I feel like we have the ability to make the playoffs,” senior Jordan Hamlett said.

“All we want to do is win,” senior Tyler Hodges said. “Last year we had a bad year, just, a winning program this year.”

“I’m looking forward to seeing how good we can work together. I want to improve (on last year),” senior James Mitchell said.

The Chieftains will be playing on a new field. The first home game is slated for September 9th.

“They’re really looking forward to it,” Clark said. “Everyone is excited.”

Game one will be at Nettleton next Friday.
