Officers and airline officials are noticing a high volume of Thanksgiving travelers
GOLDEN TRIANGLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Thousands will travel this Thanksgiving holiday to spend time with family and friends.
Some will fly. Others will hit the highway for their celebrations.
These roads are only going to get busier over the next few days.
Whether you’re going on a road trip or traveling by plane, both officers and airline officials are noticing a high volume of travelers this Thanksgiving season.
During the holiday season, thousands of people are making their way to visit family and friends.
Executive Director of the Golden Triangle Regional Airport Mike Hainsey said travelers are booking flights by the dozens.
“It’s been an extremely busy week and it will be all the way through the weekend with both the Thanksgiving travelers and the Egg Bowl being here and we received business for both aircraft and of course the Delta has been busy,” said Hainsey.
Hainsey said Delta airlines is giving passengers extra booking options.
“All week long the flights have been running full, Delta actually added flights on Saturday and Sunday for the returning students or people who are just coming and going for the holidays. On Sunday, they added two and on Saturday they added one so people can actually come here and get back as late as 11:30 P.M. if they like,” said Hainsey.
If you plan on hitting the road, The Mississippi Highway Patrol will have more troopers on the roads keeping an eye out making sure you have a safe holiday.
Troop G Public Affairs Officer, Sergeant Derrick Beckom said officers will patrol the roadways to make sure drivers aren’t speeding.
“What our administration likes for us to do just to show a strong presence that we are out on the highways and we do that every day but we need a stronger presence during the holidays to make sure that’s everyone aware of driving safely,” said Beckom.
Beckom says speeding citations usually double during the holidays.
“We kind of drop our tolerance because again you know if the public sees us out there working that will we may stop one person but they may deter 10 others to slow down,” said Beckom.
As always, Sgt. Beckom wants to remind drivers to be cautious while on the busy roads.
Troopers will also be looking out to see if you’re buckled up and they’ll be looking for impaired drivers.
