Brooksville, Mississippi (WCBI) – The Noxubee County woman that held held law enforcement at bay for nearly eight hours Monday was shot after shooting a Noxubee County deputy.

Law enforcement left Elizabeth Guyton’s Fairview Road home about 4 P.M. Monday, hoping she would turn herself in, but deputies returned when they were notified she had walked outside her home and threatened to shoot a neighbor on a tractor.

Sheriff Terry Grassaree says when an unidentified deputy approached Guyton and tried to tase her, she started shooting at Deputy Eddie Franklin. A third deputy came around Guyton’s home and shot the 53 year-old woman.

Franklin was released from the hospital Monday night. Guyton was airlifted to a Jackson hospital.

Investigators came to Guyton’s home on Monday morning to arrest her for allegedly shooting at her neighbor on Sunday when a cow got loose and wandered onto what Guyton’s property.

Guyton would not come out of her home when a SWAT team and other law enforcement arrived Monday morning.

Guyton had been living on the property with no utilities since 2009, according to neighbors.

She also has a lengthy history of mental illness.

“She came on our radar about a year and a half ago. We received calls that she was brandishing weapons and was irate. If you know someone with mental health issues call local law enforcement and let them start ahead of time trying to get them some help; try to get them in a program, trying to get everything situated because a lot of times this day is just gonna come,” said Grassaree.

The name of the deputy who opened fire has not been released.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case.
