Winter Weather Home Prep Tips for a Chilly South
Expert lists a few tips people should keep in mind when making their to-do list for winter weather preparations.
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – With temperatures dropping, an expert tells WCBI this is the perfect time to prepare before it’s too late.
Keyton Blocher is the sales manager at Military Hardware in Columbus. He says now is the time to prepare for cold weather.
“We’ve already had our first cold snap of the year and so, they’re gonna start coming up on us,” Blocher said. “They’re gonna keep, you know, getting those weird cold snaps coming in. It’s always good to get ahead of those instead of getting stuck with issues on the other end. ”
This time last year, Blocher had to conduct a d-i-y training just to make sure houses in Columbus had proper protection from freezing temperatures.
“Last year was crazy,” Blocher said. “We ended up running out of these guys. These faucet covers, all of the different types of options we carry in faucet covers actually. And everyone in town, even our distributors we buy them from, they all ran out because the entire South got hit with like really, really cold weather. It was like eight degrees. We had to come up with solutions to help people who were scared they were gonna have burst pipes.”
Blocher says it’s best to prepare for the worst.
“If your pipes do freeze, we carry heat tapes that you can plug in that will thaw out pipes instead of trying to turn on everything and get pressure built up,” Blocher said. “That’s when things burst.”
The sales manager lists a few things people can do to start preparations for a freezing winter.
“Make sure that their gas is running,” Blocher said. “Make sure that their carbon monoxide sensors are up to date, and that they don’t need a new one because you’re gonna be running gas heaters. Checking their heaters, having a company like maintenance, or a mechanical company come in and check your HAVC system that way, your heat is good to go so you don’t end up with an eight-degree day and no heat.”
If you need more help prepping your home this winter, Blocher says to stop by so his staff can give you the help you need.
