LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – September 11th, 2001. One of the darkest days in American history. Nearly 3,000 lives were lost that day, including 429 first responders. Tuesday marked the 11th anniversary of the September 11th attacks and organizations across North Mississippi gathered in honor of those who lost their lives.

Students at East Oktibbeha County Elementary watched video from that fateful day and listened to members of the National Guard speak about the importance of remembering those who served and died.

Lowndes County held a special ceremony on the front Courthouse lawn in honor of First Responders Day. The Board of Supervisors and the Shakota Tomaha chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution sponsored the event. Performers included the 5th grade class from Immanuel Christian School and the West Lowndes High School Junior ROTC.

Also in Lowndes County, Mississippi University of Women held a ceremony called “Saluting All Heroes” to thank first responders and to pay tribute to enlisted and military veteran students, faculty and staff.  The ceremony included a moment of silence and a balloon release.  Following the ceremony, a reception was held that included military recruiting information.

Today only the families of those killed in the September 11th attacks were allowed to speak at the memorial in New York City.
