New sewer project to begin soon in Starkville

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – A long-awaited sewer project will soon be underway in Starkville.

Mayor Lynn Spruill says the project is for residents along Babylon Road on the west side of Starkville.

That part of the city was annexed in 1998. The sewer project was supposed to begin within 5 years of the annexation, but that didn’t happen.

Now, Starkville was awarded a City V-G Grant this morning, and work is set to begin within the next month or so.

“A lot of them have septic tanks, but septic tanks have a life. That way, this will be a permanent feature that they can use and it doesn’t require the constant maintenance that septic tanks require,” said Mayor Lynn Spruill. “The soil associated with Mississippi and in this area is problematic for septic tanks because just the way the clay expands and contracts, so this will solve that problem and we’re delighted to be able to bring it to them, agAIn it’s long overdue and we’re just glad we were able to make it happen.”

“This is what happens in the City of Starkville when we work together, and this is what we do here,” said Vice Mayor Roy Perkins. “We are one team. When we work together as a team, we make great things happen. This is a remarkable accomplishment, and I want to say to all persons involved, a job well done.”

Spruill says the city can only handle one big project like this at a time.
