Two area boys names made the distinguished list: New Hope’s Shemar Johnson and Tupelo’s Antonio Green.

Johnson, a 6’6 guard for the Trojans, led New Hope last year with 14.5 points per game and 7 rebounds per game. He’s currently fielding interest from Mississippi State, Murray State and Southern Illinois on the recruiting circuit.

“He is so versatile as a 6’6 guard,” Clarion-Ledger high school sports editor Courtney Cronin said of Johnson. “His shooting has improved tremendously and I’m looking for him to be that dominant force with New Hope this year.”

Green, a 6’1 guard for the Golden Wave, helped lead Tupelo to another strong season in 2013-14 and was a big part of Tupelo’s first appearance in the 6A State Championship game as a freshman back in 2012.

“There’s not much more you can say about Antonio Green,” Cronin said. “He’s a true shooter and he thrives on having the ball in his hands. His shot selection has really improved over the summer.”

Green is fielding interest from Middle Tennessee, Murray State and UT-Martin amongst others. His 15.6 points per game led the Wave last season.

No area girls players made the C-L Dandy Dozen for 2014 but Tupelo’s Jaleigha Polk was named as one of the players who just missed out on the girls basketball Dandy Dozen.
