COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s a new way to get around, the city of Columbus has partnered with the Lawrence Transit System to make the area more accessible for citizens.

If you’re walking on foot, now you don’t have to. A new bus service in Columbus will take you where your heart desires. The buses for the Lawrence Transit System have been ordered and are almost ready to go.

“I am so excited about it because it’s going to provide services for so many different areas in the community. Definitely it’s going to benefit students that have a hard time with transportation to and from school and also on that makes me so excited is employment. We will create 59 to 75 jobs,” said Director of Operation Dorothy Dowdell.

The routes will travel all around the city, stopping at key spots on highway 45, college street, main street and many more. Director of Operations Dorothy Dowdell says these new stops will help create more business for local shops.

“Starting out we understand that this is trial and error, we’re going to see how things work, we are projecting this to be very successful for ourselves as well as the citizens of Columbus,” added Mrs. Dowdell.

It’s a new transit system that many are excited about stopping at dozens of locations around Columbus including the mall.

“It would be pretty nice because I live near main street and it’s just outside of walking distance but a bus system would get here real quick and it wouldn’t be any problem,” said resident Johnathan Best.

“I’m a single mom, sometimes if my car breaks down or something, it would be easy for me to transport if something happens to my car, I think it will be very useful for everybody,” said resident Elle Adams.

“It would help Columbus out greatly because a lot of peoples on feet and the bus would help out tremendously especially with the price of gas,” said resident Bobby Irions.

And the citizens seem to agree. There will be different passes to ride the system and discounts for students and senior citizens. The service is set to be up and running sometime this November.

The city of Columbus will install the bus stops and benches at each suggested location. For information about applying for jobs you can apply at lawrencetransitsystem.org and the WIN job center.
