MUW’s Owl Food Pantry: Helping lower food insecurity for college students
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – One in four Mississippians struggles with food insecurity, and that number is higher on the state’s college campuses.
That reality prompted leaders at Mississippi University for Women to do something to help.
Since 2021, The W has been operating the Owl Food Pantry.
The pantry is open to help currently enrolled students who are struggling with food security to have access to quality food when they need it.
The pantry began as a partnership with Americorps VISTA and takes donations from both the campus and the surrounding community.
“S,o this is our last day of a campus food drive that is hosted by our student’s government association and The W council and family relations. And they have been organizing this food drive to help benefit the Owl Food Pantry. With one in four Mississippians struggling with food insecurity, this is an important resource for our current students. Anybody within the community can donate to the pantry. We do in-kind donations, as well as monetary donations, and we do that through the MUW foundation office,” said Jessica Harpole, VP of Student Affairs/Dean of Students at MUW.
The Owl Food Pantry is open to W students on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
