MUW Studio Art Majors Prepare For Senior Exhibition

COLUMBUS, Miss. — Two Mississippi University for Women studio art majors, Kendra DeForrest and Brittany Humphrey, will present their senior exhibition, “To Be Continued…,” Wednesday, April 20 through Sunday, May 15.

The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, May 13 at 5:30 p.m. in the Eugenia Summer Gallery.

“I think that people can expect to see artwork that is playful and lighthearted, but more than that, they will see a show put together by two students who have worked very hard, not only in their academic career, but also made tremendous strides in their artwork as well,” DeForrest said.

DeForrest was born in Mobile, Ala, in 1991 and later moved to Pascagoula.

DeForrest started her collegiate career at East Mississippi Community College and transferred to The W.

She is president of Kappa Pi Rho Chapter Honorary Art Fraternity.

Her work has been in various exhibitions, including The Mississippi Collegiate Show.

DeForrest plans on continuing her career in art after graduating.

“If I had to describe my work in a few words, it would be that I not only have my own thoughts and interest in my work, but also how someone will look at it. I want people to look at my artwork and feel comfortable doing so,” DeForrest said.

Humphrey was born in 1994 in Merced, Calif.

Her family stayed in the city of Sarah after her father retired from the military.

She graduated from Strayhorn High School in 2012 and continued her education at The W.

Humphrey has participated in numerous juried exhibitions and won multiple awards.

Humphrey is working on her bachelor of fine arts degree with an emphasis in ceramics.

After graduation, she plans to pursue a clay residency opportunities in different areas.

Her work shows nature in different aspects, and she also focuses on sculptures, drawings and paintings.

Humphrey has an interest in cloudbeasts and golems.

Contemporary artist Beth Cavener Stitcher influenced her cloudbeast paintings and drawings.

Humphrey’s golems are three-dimensional sculptures and influenced by Mike Klapthor, a ceramic artist who makes ceramic robots.

She also is inspired by childhood cartoons and games, such as Digimon and Pokémon.

DeForrest added, “Brittany and I are working very hard to make this the best show we can, and hope that when people see it, they are just as happy with it as we will be.”
