MUW Athletics To Begin Nationwide Search For Coaches

COLUMBUS, Miss. — Mississippi University for Women has announced a nationwide search to fill four head coaching positions for the 2017 seasons.

“We are extremely excited to begin the first step of developing quality intercollegiate teams here at the W,” said Jason Trufant, The W’s athletic director.

“A thorough and exhaustive search for the right fit for our staff will be conducted for each of the new postings to ensure a high level student-athlete and collegiate experience will be brought back to campus.”

For the 2017 seasons, Trufant is looking to bring aboard head coaches for men’s soccer, baseball, volleyball and softball.

Both men’s and women’s cross country will be added to The W’s athletic department, bringing a total of six intercollegiate sports to The W in 2017.

Additionally, women’s soccer, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s basketball and potentially women’s lacrosse are sports under consideration to be added in 2018.

With an emphasis on fitting The W’s mission, Trufant is searching for coaches who can recruit and develop student-athletes who seek to excel in both an academic and athletic setting. In addition, coaches will be responsible for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) compliance, community involvement, fundraising and game day operations.

All candidates are required to have at least three years of prior coaching and/or playing experience at the collegiate level with knowledge and adherence to NCAA rules and university policies.

All candidates are required to have obtained a bachelor’s degree while a master’s degree is preferred.

The W discontinued intercollegiate athletics in 2002 following a devastating tornado that destroyed a primary sports venue.

At that time, it was a member of the Gulf South Conference and offered sports that included basketball, softball and tennis teams.
