STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – This week thousands of fourth grade students from around the state are attending the annual Wood Magic Science Fair on the campus of MSU.
As a noisy portable sawmill turns rough logs into lumber, as students are getting a much needed lesson on the importance of wood from our forests, wood products, and wildlife found there.
“Yeah, its one of the biggest drivers of the economy in the state. Just because we have so much of it and we are able to produce the products and send them all over the world,” said David Jones, MSU Assist. Professor
At one of ten stations, using the example of a cheese sandwich, they learn of a durable wood sandwich made of plywood.
“If you turn it to a different 90 degree angle it is stronger than if you leave it at the same angle,” said Ian Riggins, Fair Goer.
The excursion stops at 10 stations at the forest products lab,and its helping them to be wood wise with our natural resources.
“For the most part we are trying to teach them we’ve managed our forest responsibly and produce products that are sustainable,” said Jones.
For every tree that’s cut down in our state forests, five are planted to replace it.
