MSU CAMPUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The value of a smoke detector system was proven about 2 am Friday when a fire alarm actuated at the Church of Christ on East Lee Blvd near the MSU campus. The East Oktibbeha Fire Department was dispatched with the Starkville FD also being requested. Additional county units were also dispatched as there was a report of smoke and visible flames.
Fortunately the fire was quickly found and efficiently extinguished. Fire was confined to a kitchen area on the first floor of the sprawling complex but there was smoke throughout the building. The cause is being investigated but is believed to be electrical.
Personnel were on the scene for over 2.5 hours removing smoke, checking for fire extension, and overhauling the fire area.
Additional units were cancelled as the fire was quickly controlled. Due to the relative lack of a water supply for this area those additional units would have been used to initiate a water shuttle, but fortunately were not needed.
The church was planning for a large group of folks for the Homecoming weekend, instead they have a lot of cleaning up to do.
