STARKVILLE< Miss. (WCBI) – Sunday will mark the 50th anniversary in which Dr. Richard E. Holmes integrated Mississippi State University by becoming the first African American student to enroll on campus.
Dr. Holmes first enrolled at MSU in 1965. Unlike the violent events that unfolded in Oxford when James Meredith integrated Ole Miss just three years earlier, Richard Holmes’ admission into Mississippi State was peaceful.
He says he never had anyone try to attack or cause physical harm to him while being there.
Dr. Holmes says he’s proud of that. He’s also proud of the progress the university has made as a whole.
In 1969, Holmes earned his bachelors degree from MSU. After taking some time off to take a teaching position in Alabama, he later returned to Starkville and completed his masters degree in 1977.
Holmes says things were not always easy for him on campus, but quitting was never an option.
“Looking back, I’m really grateful to be in the moment. And the proud thing is being able to see the progress that Mississippi State has made over the last 50 years,” Holmes said.
There will be a reception marking the 50th anniversary this Sunday on MSU’s campus in the Colvard Student Union from 2pm until 4 pm. The event is open to the public.
