MSU Baseball Falls At Arkansas, Loses Sixth Straight

STARKVILLE, Miss. (MSU Athletics) – Mississippi State was held to four hits as it dropped a sixth straight game in Southeastern Conference baseball action.

Arkansas broke open a tight contest with three runs in the fourth inning on the way to a 6-1 win over MSU Saturday night at Baum Stadium.

With the win, Arkansas clinched its fifth straight conference series for the first time since 2004. The Razorbacks improved to 26-17 overall and 11-9 in league play, while the Bulldogs fell to 22-21 and 6-14.

“Right now, we are not a good offensive team,” MSU head coach John Cohen said. “I thought they had a really big crowd tonight and I thought our kids didn’t handle the environment. We are struggling to have good at-bats. Tonight, we were not good in any phase of the game.”

MSU starter Preston Brown (5-5) allowed seven hits and six runs (three earned) in 6.1 innings of work, with one strikeout and four walks. Zac Houston also pitched for the Bulldogs.

In the three-run fourth inning, the Razorbacks took advantage of a critical error which kept the inning afloat.

After Ryan Gridley walked and scored on a groundout to bring the Bulldogs within 3-1, Arkansas tacked on three runs in the home half of the seventh inning.

Arkansas finished with eight hits, including multi-hit nights by Tyler Spoon and Brett McAfee. Dominic Taccolini (6-3) allowed four hits and one run in 6.2 innings of work to earn the win.

Jacob Robson had three of MSU’s four hits. Seth Heck had the other hit.
