MSU Baseball Beats San Diego, Snaps Two-Game Skid

STARKVILLE, Miss. (MSU Athletics) – Mississippi State bounced back into the win column with a 4-2 baseball victory over San Diego Saturday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field.Sophomore right-hander Austin Sexton (2-0) picked up his third career quality start and the team’s second of the weekend by throwing a career-long seven innings, while allowing three hits and two runs (both earned) with five strikeouts and four walks.

Daniel Brown completed the contest for his first save and the team’s sixth this season. MSU pitching struck out 10 total batters in the contest.

The Bulldogs have now allowed three runs or fewer in nine straight games, the longest such streak for MSU since 1985.

San Diego (5-7) scored first in the second inning when Colton Waltner hit a two-run home run – his first of the season.

MSU (14-2) answered with three runs in the home half of the second inning. The Bulldogs rallied to come from behind for victory for the eighth time this season.

In the MSU second inning, Wes Rea singled and Gavin Collins walked. The Toreros failed to get an out on a Cody Walker sacrifice bunt attempt loading the bases.

Brent Rooker and Josh Lovelady followed with back-to-back sacrifice flies. An RBI-single by Matt Spruill placed the Maroon and White on top for good.

In the sixth inning, Brown doubled and Luke Reynolds singled. USD turned a double play to limit the damage but a run did score on the play.

MSU finished with six hits. Spruill had his first multiple hit game as a Bulldog.

USD finished with three hits. P.J. Conlon (1-1) was lifted in the fourth inning and took the loss.

MSU and San Diego will conclude their three-game series Sunday with a 1:30 p.m. first pitch at Dudy Noble Field. That contest will be available nationally on SEC Network +.
