Monroe Inmate Found Dead In Cell

ABERDEEN (WCBI) – An autopsy will be ordered to determine the cause of death of an inmate at the Monroe County Detention Center.

Coroner Alan Gurley says he was called to the jail around 7:30 after  deputies found 55 year old Joseph Smith of Aberdeen dead in his cell during a routine bed check.   Gurley is sending the body to Pearl for an autopsy but adds there are no signs of foul play and Smith had a history of health issues.

Gurley’s office and the Mississippi Bureau Of Investigation will handle the case which is standard procedure in any jail death.
